what is somatic art therapy?

Somatic art therapy combines principles from Art Therapy and Somatic Healing to best address your treatment goals and needs.

Art therapy is a mental health profession which involves the use of art materials and the creative process to support emotional understanding and exploration. Somatic Healing adopts principles from mindfulness to bring you into your body to better understand and cope with your emotions, the sensations you experience in your body and find tools to help you cope with your feelings.

Both can help explore your past, build self-esteem, confidence, find ways to self-soothe and explore your feelings.

Somatic Art Therapy is for you if you are feeling stuck, want to get in touch with your emotions or feel that therapy hasn’t felt helpful in the past.

 Frequently asked questions…

  • Art therapy involves the use of art-making and the creative process in a therapeutic setting. The art-making allows for you to express yourself (your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, etc) in a different way than many of us are used to. In engaging in art-making, we access a different part of the brain (the right side) which can help us tap into the subconscious more easily, often allowing for you to get deeper than you would by simply talking. Somatic Healing uses principles from mindfulness to find safe ways to come into your body. This makes space for you to better understand your sensations, emotions, reactions and how to cope in your daily life.

  • Somatic art therapy is great for anyone who has an interest and desire to engage in the creative process and better understand their body. You don’t need to be “good” at art-making or mindfulness in order to engage in somatic art therapy. Individuals of all ages can benefit -I am currently only working with adults.

  • Each session looks different depending on the client. Usually, we’ll start by verbally checking in and seeing how your week went. Depending on what presents itself, I may then suggest an art directive-I will provide the materials and any explanation needed. This may serve to help you gain clarity on the issue, externalize your feelings or use the art-making as a way to relax. Then, we may process the art itself and any thoughts or feelings that came up for you in your process. This issue similar when we engage in somatic healing-I will guide you through a process to come into your body and better understand and identify your experience. Sometimes we use both, sometimes it’s one, other times we’ll just talk-it truly depends. We will usually close the session by summarizing anything you learned or realized and sometimes I will give you “homework” for the week until our next session.

  • I completed my Master’s in Art Therapy and Creative Development at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. I then obtained and became a Board Certified, Registered Art Therapist. Later, I received further training and certification in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy.
