Let’s talk about the body…
Our body’s main function is to keep us alive and safe.
The most common way many of us are taught about the body is through its biological functions: how the organs and systems all work together to keep you alive. What many of us aren’t taught, are the many ways in which our bodies energetically, somatically and sensationally keep us safe and can provide us with infinites amount of information.
Our body is constantly sending us signals: whether that may be a stomach growl to tell you that you are hungry, or your heart beating fast to signal danger or anxiety or your head hurting as a way of asking you for rest-it truly is filled with so much wisdom! However, in Western society, we’re often not taught how to listen to our bodies. But rather how to “do,” “produce” and be “more efficient” or even how our bodies should look. This disconnect and neglect of our bodies can result in mental and physical illness, overall feelings of disconnect and sometimes even leaves us feeling lost.
So what does that mean?
Well, in my opinion, it means that it is our job to find ways in which we can come back into our body-slowly and safely-in order to rebuild that relationship, sense of connection with ourselves and overall self awareness. Coming into the body is a huge component of Somatic Art Therapy and is often most helpful to do so with someone who has the appropriate training to help guide and hold space for you. However, there are definitely certain things that you can start to do on your own.
